At a glance

  • Repeated jams need diagnosis, not more force.
  • Compare thickness and weight with the actual path.
  • Load the number of sheets specified by the manual.

Clear the sheet following the manual

Stop the batch at the first blockage. Use the model’s clearing procedure rather than pulling randomly or pushing a second sheet behind the first. The manual specifies covers, order and conditions to follow.

Before restarting, check for remaining fragments and inspect the sheet. A fold, a mark in the same place or several sheets pulled together point to different causes: record the exact symptom.

Rule out exceeded media limits

Compare size, thickness and weight with published data for the path actually loaded. A manual-feed limit does not apply to a cassette. A figure restricted to manufacturer photo papers does not validate every third-party cardstock.

If a known limit is exceeded, change media or use a permitted path. If thickness is missing, do not infer it from weight. Thick-paper mode does not turn out-of-limit media into permitted media.

Check loading and sheet condition

Check orientation, edge guides and sheet count against the model procedure. Over-tight guides can obstruct a sheet; loose guides can allow its angle to vary. Keep paper flat and do not reuse a sheet already folded by a jam.

  1. Try plain paper to check basic operation.
  2. Reread instructions for the path intended for thick media.
  3. If the media is permitted, load a single sheet when the manual requires it.
  4. Stop if the same jam returns and keep model, paper, path and a defect photo for support.

Questions about this guide

Will lighter paper necessarily feed?

No. Thickness, stiffness, coating and sheet condition also matter. Check a product with documented specifications.

Can I push the sheet to help the rollers?

Follow only the manual’s loading procedure. Forcing or pushing a sheet during feeding can worsen a jam.

Manufacturer limits apply to the media and feed paths stated in each document. A documentary match is not a physical test of our cardstock.
